A new development, which will break ground in 2018, will add a fourth side to the downtown Gainesville square near the parking deck. The project will include 15,000 square feet of street-level retail and restaurants with approximately 40 luxury condominiums for sale with prices starting in the $300,000 price range. The city said it plans to add to the Brenau Downtown Center parking deck to accommodate more parking.

Regarding the plan to increase residential options in downtown Gainesville, how will this impact parking availability for those outside the downtown who plan to visit from time to time? Will parking availability be reduced?

The city plans to add two floors to the Brenau Downtown Center parking deck.

“This has always been in the plan for the city as the area grew,” with the deck originally being built with the ability to have two floors added, Gainesville spokeswoman Catiel Felts wrote in an email. “Our research prior to this new development showed the parking deck stays less than half occupied on average. In addition, there are 2,495 parking spaces in downtown Gainesville.”

City officials said it’s too early in the process to be able to provide a timeline or cost for adding to the parking deck.
