Gainesville Water Resources has reported a sewer spill on Lakeshore Drive off Dawsonville Highway Thursday, Oct. 29, although it is not known how much sewage spilled.

Heavy winds and rain from Hurricane Zeta caused a tree to fall on and damage an aerial span of sewer line, resulting in the spill, according to a news release. People are encouraged to avoid coming in contact with the water in Longwood Cove.

Gainesville Water Resources crews were repairing the line Thursday afternoon.

As of Thursday afternoon, the city had not yet confirmed the amount of raw sewage spilled or received test results from the nearby streams, according to a news release.

Lakeshore Drive from Dawsonville Highway to Lakemont Drive is expected to remain closed to traffic most of Thursday.
