Update, March 5: An autopsy determined Tracy Gaither died of heart disease, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The death has been ruled due to natural causes.

Previous story: A Hall County Jail inmate died Tuesday, March 3, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called in to assist in the investigation.

Hall County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Derreck Booth said the death of Tracy Gaither, 54, of Gainesville “appears to have been natural.” The GBI was requested per standard procedure.

Gaither was arrested Feb. 28 and housed in the jail’s medical department “because of a pre-existing medical condition,” Booth said.

“Gaither was found unresponsive at approximately 5:15 a.m. Tuesday, March 3. Jail staff performed lifesaving measures until the arrival of Hall County Fire Services, who continued them,” Booth wrote in an email.

The attempts to resuscitate Gaither were unsuccessful.

Gainesville Police Cpl. Jessica Van said Gaither was stopped for a brake light being out and had a Hall County probation violation warrant.

Booth said it was a Superior Court probation violation, with the underlying charge being possession of a drug-related object.

The Times sent an inquiry to the GBI.

No further information was released.
