An 11-year-old boy died in a car wreck Wednesday night after the driver of another car hit a deer on Buford Highway in Buford, police said.

Andrew Caymol, 11, died at the scene of the wreck after sustaining serious injuries, Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Michele Pihera said. The boy was riding in the front seat of a Honda Accord  that caught fire after impact.

Yagi Fumio, 28, of Suwanee, drove a Subaru Legacy southbound after 10 p.m. Wednesday on Buford Highway when a deer appeared in the car’s path.

“The deer and the Subaru collided,” Pihera said in a news release. “The Subaru swerved into the northbound lane colliding with the silver Honda Accord.”

The cars collided head-on, causing the Honda to catch fire. Andrew’s father, Mateo Caymol, was driving the Honda Accord, and the boy’s brother Matthew was in the backseat, Pihera said.

The Gwinnett County Fire Department extinguished the fire and treated the people in the cars.

Firefighters found Andrew dead inside his car. The other three people suffered serious injuries.

“At this point in the investigation, the lead investigator does not believe that Andrew or (Mateo) were using seatbelts inside the vehicle,” Pihera said. “It is still unknown if Matthew was restrained.”

The injured people were transported to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville.

Both cars were sent to the Gwinnett County Police Headquarters.

No charges have been filed.
