Surrounded by new subdivisions, Mount Salem Baptist Church is a piece of old Flowery Branch located on Mount Salem Circle.

The church was established in 1818, making it one of the oldest churches in the Chattahoochee Baptist Association. It is not known how many members there were at the start of the church, but by 1910, there were 80 members.

Before settling at its current site, the church had four different locations.

By 1913, plans were made to build a permanent church building on the site of the old Big Creek School. Members of the church participated in the building of the church, and by 1916, the building was completed at a cost of $661.78.

Through the years, improvements were made to the church such as electric lights added in 1938 and new benches in 1939. A baptizing pool was added down by a nearby creek. In 1948, two Sunday school rooms were added to the church.

From 1949 to 1957, under the pastorship of the Reverend O’Dean McNeal, the church started adding activities for young people. During this time, the church choir sang on the radio. It also had a baseball team guided by the Rev. McNeil and Brother W.D. Clark.

From 1967 to 1975, the Rev. J. Paul Barnes guided the church through a complete remodeling, including a new baptizing pool. Youth choirs were formed and three new deacons were ordained.

Over the years, Salem Baptist Church has continued to grow. The church has a membership of more than 270. Clyde Self recently was named the 28th pastor at the church since 1905.
