Jim Dollar talks about sponsoring NASCAR driver Reed Sorenson in the beginning of Sorenson's career.
Slide show: Take a tour of the Dollars' home at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

The lakeside Tuscan-inspired home that Jim and Muriel Dollar call home is luxury at its finest.

The design of the five-bedroom, seven-and-two-half-bath Lake Lanier home was inspired by the couple's many trips to Italy.

The home features multiple decks, an oversized stone fireplace, custom furniture and reclaimed-wood floors and exposed ceiling beams. Artwork they have collected enhances the wall space.

The basement also features a wine cellar, sauna, pool table, well-dressed bar and views of the lake.

The 4-year-old home sits in Harbor Point on a peninsula overlooking Lake Lanier with a view of the Appalachian Mountains in the distance.

But this is just one high-rise view the Dollars enjoy. The other sits nine-stories high above Atlanta Motor Speedway at 1500 Tara Place, the exclusive luxury condos that are a part of the racetrack development.

"We got the condo when we still lived in Fayetteville, so about 11 or 12 years," said Muriel Dollar, who added that the couple actually owns two condos at Atlanta Motor Speedway, located south of Atlanta in Hampton. "We have one that we use for entertaining and one that is for sale that we use as a corporate lease.

"We only use that during the race. I think there are five full-time residents out there," Muriel added. "All of our family and friends are on the north side now."

The Dollars, who lived in the condo for a six-month stint, jumped on board with 1500 Tara Place years ago. The couple also own a condo in the VIP Speedway Condos at Lowes Motor Speedway in Charlotte, N.C., a mountain retreat in Ellijay and a beach home in Destin, Fla.

The attraction to purchase the condos at Atlanta Motor Speedway began with Jim's love for racing.

But Beverly Currie, owner of Beverly Currie Real Estate and broker for Tara Place, said the condos are also attractive because they are one of a kind.

"The joy of it is being able to watch the race, and especially from the roof," Currie said of penthouse condos, like what the Dollars have. "You can see as far as Pine Mountain ... and you can see the skyline of Atlanta at night."

There are 46 units in the building.

"There's a pool, tennis courts and exercise room with private parking at race time - private parking anytime," said Currie, who has been working closely with NASCAR since the 1980s. "That building has a 300-person ballroom in it, so the condo owners have a clubhouse and a ballroom they can use ... so there are multi-uses in the condo."

Some of the condos at Atlanta Motor Speedway are rented out during race weekends starting at $15,000.

"I just leased one for $30,000, a penthouse for the September race," Currie said. "Which is equivalent to Muriel and Jim Dollar's penthouse."

One of Jim Dollar's favorite features of the penthouse is the spiral staircase that leads to the roof.

"That's where everybody heads when the race starts," said the Norcross concrete company owner.

The condo has two bedrooms and two bathrooms with opulent dark wood trim - complete with a dog motif throughout - along with tray ceilings and a full view of the speedway from the den.

Currie said you can visit each of the condos and have an entirely different experience.

"Some have put racing motifs in there with black and white with all their souvenirs, and then you have the grand ... opulence like Muriel and Jim Dollars'; it's gorgeous," she said. "That's what's so cool. You get to go and enjoy and visit all the homeowners, and it's so different in each one; as different as the people are in their places, too."
