Before children head out in costume to collect candy, they can be entertained by characters on stage.

The Habersham Community Theatre and the Holly Theater will perform two children-based shows before Halloween.

“Treasure Island” is a kid-friendly tale featuring pirates and adventure with the focus on Jim Hawkins. After a bad day at school, Jim’s mother insists he eat something healthy. He refuses and is sent to his room, not suspecting his great pirate adventure is about to begin. Then Billy Bones steps into his bedroom.

Suddenly the audience is swept into the action of high seas adventure including a treasure map, Long John Silver, Ben Gunn and a cast of rowdy pirates. The production features community players ages 7-14.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, and Saturday, Oct. 29, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30.

Tickets are $10.

“James and the Giant Peach Jr.” features a young boy sent by his conniving aunts to chop down their old fruit tree.

Then James discovers a magic potion which results in a giant peach. He finds himself in the center of the gigantic fruit among human-sized insects with equally over-sized personalities.

Then the peach falls from the tree and rolls into the ocean. The group faces hunger, sharks and plenty of disagreements, but thanks to James’ quick wit and creative thinking, they learn to live and work together as a family.

Performances will be at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays Oct. 21-30.

Tickets are $14 for adults and $10 for students.
