Inspired by the ocean, island and tropical subjects of exhibits and films, Fernbank Museum of Natural History designed its summer programs with the theme of “97 Days of Play.”

The series of activities, programs, giveaways and family days will kick off Saturday with Island Adventure Day, which will feature live lemurs, music, crafts and games.

Island Adventure Day is inspired by Fernbank’s current special exhibits and IMAX films, including “Whales: Giants of the Deep,” “Journey to the South Pacific,” and “Island of Lemurs: Madagascar.”

Guests will have the chance to come face-to-face with live lemurs and other creatures native to Madagascar.

A shell scavenger hunt also will be conducted as children search the museum for rare shells and unique shell fossils while learning lesser known facts about the artifacts. Guests who complete the hunt will be entered to win a prize.

To go along with the scavenger hunt, Fernbank’s educators will have a variety of ocean artifacts available at the museum’s interactive shell cart.

Fernbank will host Superhero Day to allow guests to honor their dads by dressing as their favorite superhero. The museum also will honor its favorite prehistoric creatures with fun games and activities with a Dinosaur Birthday Bash.

As always, Fernbank will integrate educational days to provide children a chance to learn about science. On Reptile Day, guests can interact with animals as they learn information from Fernbank’s educators.

“We are so glad to provide more opportunities for kids to foster a passion for science,” said Charlee Glenn, a program educator at Fernbank Museum. “We have such exciting activities and hands-on activities planned, and we can’t wait for the community to come out and experience them all summer long.”

Fernbank’s 97 Days of Play will also offer special giveaway days in July. From July 1-29, the first 250 children will receive a real shark tooth during Shark Tooth Tuesdays, in celebration of the new IMAX film “Great White Shark.” On Sundays from July 6-27, the first 100 children will receive a free safari hat during Safari Hat Sundays.

Other themed days during the summer include Fins and Flippers Day on June 28 and Carnival Science Day on July 26.

Museum tickets are $18 for adults, $17 for students and seniors, $16 for children ages 3-12 and free for children ages 2 and younger. The museum is at 767 Clifton Road NE in Atlanta. Parking is free.
