While many 5-kilometer race participants may have become accustomed to running on the paved streets and sidewalks, Lake Lanier Islands Resort offers a unique twist: racing at night with Christmas-themed lights guiding the path.
The Lanier under the Lights 5K will begin at 5:45 p.m. Nov. 15 and 16 at 7000 Lanier Islands Parkway in Buford. Registration for Saturday’s race is closed after the maximum number of participants was reached Oct. 25. However, the Sunday race is still accepting applications. The deadline to enter the Peachtree Road Race qualifier is Nov. 9.
Runners may register at active.com. Both races are limited to 2,000 participants.
All adults and children must register for the run. If a child is too young to run, he or she may be pushed in a stroller. All strollers must start in the rear of the sixth race corral and use a walking pace.
Any participant found to be running the course while pushing a stroller will be disqualified, race organizers said. The rule is to ensure the safety of other participants and the child in the stroller. The roads are too narrow, and it is simply too dark to weave around and run alongside other runners during the race, race organizers said.
The entry fee is $45. Runners will be tracked and timed with the ChronoTrack B-Tag System.
First place man and woman winners will receive $150 with second place receiving $75 and third place $50. Bobble head dolls will be awarded to the overall first, second and third men and women runner; the male and female masters for 40 and older; and the male and female grand masters 50 and older. Age group winners will receive a Santa Claus Bobble head doll. Participants are asked to bring an unwrapped toy or a check valued at $10 or more for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots. Those donating will be entered into a raffle drawing.
Proceeds will benefit the Hamilton Mill Christian Church’s ‘Secret Santa Mission,’ which funds community outreach missions including providing a Merry Christmas to the children of deployed soldiers.
