One of the founding members of The Irish Tenors will once again share his vocal talents at First Baptist Church of Gainesville.

“An Encore Evening with John McDermott” will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 12, in the sanctuary hall at 751 Green St. NW in Gainesville. Nearly 900 people attended McDermott’s concert last February.

Before the concert and during the intermission, McDermott walked through the audience, greeting and speaking to all. Many enjoyed the personal touch as well as the music.

“The McDermott concert was a refreshing evening filled with a delightful blend of Irish homespun tales of love, family and brilliant music that warms the heart and soul of all ages,” said Pam Ware, director of Gainesville High School Theater program. “McDermott’s charisma is felt by each individual because of the honest emotions expressed through his music and the humorous folk tales of his Irish upbringing. He lifts one’s spirit through his amazing voice and personal contact with the audience.”

McDermott and two other musicians will perform for 90 minutes, singing a variety of traditional Irish and Scottish ballads and tunes, contemporary songs and a few sacred songs.

Prior to forming The Irish Tenors, McDermott enjoyed a successful solo career. In 2002, he hosted his own PBS special called “John McDermott: A Time to Remember.” He has sung with many of the great symphonies of the world including the Atlanta and Nashville symphonies, but he is at his best when singing with his two regular accompanists as he will be at this concert.

Tickets are $17-$92 and can be purchased at or 800-595-4849. After March 1, hard copy ticket information can be obtained by calling the church office at 770-534-7354. Proceeds will benefit the music ministry of First Baptist of Gainesville.
