The Humane Society of Northeast Georgia invites pet owners to strut their stuff with their dogs in its annual Mutt Strut 5-kilometer and 1-mile walk Saturday at Lakeview Academy.

This one-of-a-kind event, encouraging dog owners and their furry friends to get active.

Online registration is closed but day-of-event registration begins at 7 a.m. for $30. Shirts will be given out but are guaranteed only to those who have preregistered for the 23rd event. Runners are invited to warm up during the 1-mile walk/run at 8:15 a.m., and the 5K begins at 8:45 a.m. Only one entry fee is necessary to participate in both races.

Participants in either walk/run may bring their dogs as long as they are vaccinated, leashed, nonaggressive and in good physical condition. Entrants are asked to limit themselves to one dog per participant.

Home Depot of Gainesville will provide an activity tent for children. Refreshments will be available, and entertainment includes a DJ providing music.

“Many of the participants own dogs that are alums of our Humane Society and it turns into a family reunion for them,” said Julie Edwards, the Humane Society’s director of development and marketing.

Ribbons will be awarded to all 1-mile race participants. Other awards will be given to the overall male/female and overall masters male/female age group. Awards will be given for first, second and third place in standard age groups from 10 and younger to 75 and older.

“HSNEGA is always very appreciative of the community’s support of this event, and look forward to seeing our friends — human and canine — at the 2014 event,” said Andy Kalinauskas, president of HSNEGA’s Board of Directors.

All proceeds from the Mutt Strut will benefit the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia animal rescue and adoption programs.
