Friday is more than just the start of a new month, it's also First Friday in downtown Gainesville.

Main Street Gainesville is host of the event the first Friday of every month from June through September. The event features live music on the square and an opportunity for visitors to enjoy extended shopping hours as many downtown shops stay open later.

Another feature of First Friday is the Art Walk from 5-8 p.m., organized by Frames You-Nique on Main Street.

"The downtown merchants have offered artists the opportunity to show their works at different places around the square," said Don Griffin, Frames You-Nique owner.

"If there's space on the sidewalk, the artists can set up there, but if not, they are able to set up inside."

Having the indoor option keeps the event weatherproof.

"Even if it's raining, folks can still come out and see the artist," Griffin said.

"We've had a great luck with being able to showcase different artists each month," Griffin said. "Even if you come to First Friday every month, you'd get to see a variety of artists."
