Ordinarily you wouldn’t pair insects with food, but that’s exactly what folks are doing for the eighth annual Flowery Branch Car Show and Chili Cook-off.

One of the special features of the event is the "Bugs at the Branch" VW Show. This is the fourth year for the Volkswagen "bug" show. The festivities will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday on Main Street in downtown Flowery Branch.

Organizers are billing the event as, "the biggest little car show and chili contest in Georgia."

All proceeds raised on Saturday will benefit the local Shop With a Cop and Coats for Kids programs, organizers say.

"You can come sign up for the cook off that day, but it’s a good idea to get the rules off the city’s website in advance," said Charlotte Cornett, one of the event’s coordinators. "You definitely want to bring enough for the judges to have some, but if you want to be in the running for the People’s Choice Award, you want to have about five or six gallons to pass out samples. We’ll provide the spoons and little cups."

With more than 20 vendors and 10 contestants already signed up for the cook off, Cornett says they’re expecting a pretty good turn out. There will also be arts and crafts, music and a swap meet.

More than 70 trophies will be handed out for awards like best in show in the classic car competition and best tasting chili.

The entry fee for either car show is $20 per contestant. There’s no fee to enter the chili cook-off. Participants can register in advance, or the day of the show.
