Cage Free String Band fiddling around Sautee

The Cage Free String Band, known for its blend of old-time Appalachian and New England contra dance music, will add a spring to dancers’ steps Saturday, April 25, in Sautee Nacoochee.

This band, which has played for many dances and community events in Northeast Georgia, is a regular at the Sautee Nacoochee Community Association dance held in the SNCA historic gym.

Fiddlers Margie McDonald and Ann Whitley supply the harmony of the songs. Both classically trained musicians know how to blend their instruments in various music genres.

McDonald started playing traditional fiddle music nine years ago and is well-versed in genres from New England contra dance to Scottish and English country dance music. Whitley has been involved in traditional music for more than 30 years as a contra dance musician, an organizer of several music camps and a performing and recording artist. She is the director of the Pick and Bow Traditional Music School in Dahlonega.

Jennie Inglis plays the bass fiddle while Mark Baker plays the guitar. The pair have played for several years at the “Learn and Contra” classes at SNCA.

The band’s banjo player, Walter Daves, is the organizer and caller for the classes.

But the April caller will be Doug Singleton. A regular at Atlanta’s Chattahoochee Country Dancers Friday night dances, he calls often in places such as Cincinnati, Huntsville, Chattanooga, Berea, Nashville, Tampa and beyond. Singleton is known for his clear teaching, interesting dances and ability to arrive at great matches between the tunes played by the band and the dances he chooses to call. His choices should be well-matched at April’s dance, since his wife Ann Whitley is one of the fiddlers in the band.

The dancing will be from 8-11 p.m. with a free lesson at 7:30 p.m. No partner or prior experience is necessary; dance coordinators can pair newcomers with experienced dancers throughout the evening.

Admission is $7 for SNCA members, $9 for nonmembers, $5 for students and children 12 and younger are free with a supervising adult.

The SNCA gym is at 2834 Ga. 255 North, a quarter-mile off Ga. 17 in Sautee.
