Bicyclists sprint through downtown streets
Races begin in Gainesville on Friday night
Bicyclists gather in front of Wrenched Bicycles for an evening ride in April. The bicycle shop will be the starting point for street sprints Friday night. Races will continue Saturday and Sunday in Flowery Branch.

Instead of whizzing through the streets of France, bicyclists will race around downtown Gainesville and Flowery Branch to kick off the Georgia Championship Series.

Racing will begin at 6 p.m. Friday as bikers pedal as fast as they can on Bradford Street Northwest from Academy Street to Forrest Street. It is part of 2014 Wrenched Bicycles Street Sprints & Crits third annual Dingo Days of Summer.

Then on Saturday and Sunday, cyclists will head south to race around historic downtown Flowery Branch as part of the Georgia Championship Series Criteriums.

Races start at 9:15 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday at Main and Railroad streets. Race fees range from $6-$10 Friday and $25-$50 Saturday and Sunday. Beginners are welcome.

Spectators may line up along the course in Gainesville and Flowery Branch to watch the bicyclists for free.

The races will continue rain or shine.
