VCU knocks Georgia State out of tourney

RICHMOND, Va. — Eric Maynor scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half to leading Virginia Commonwealth to a 61-52 win over Georgia State on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Colonial Athletic Association tournament.

Maynor, the CAA player of the year, made 7-of-11 field goals and dished out four assists for the Rams (22-9), who won their eighth straight quarterfinal game to beat the Panthers (12-20) for the 10th straight time.

The Rams advance to play the winner of the Old Dominion-Hofstra game in the semifinals.

Brandon Rozell added 12 points and Bradford Burgess 11 for the Rams, who hit 9-of-15 3-pointers. Virginia Commonwealth went 13 of 21 from the floor in the second half, 8-for-9 on 3s.

Virginia Commonwealth used a 29-12 run that spanned more than 13 minutes to claim a 44-27 lead. Burgess had eight points and Maynor added seven during the spurt.
