This week: Region matchups on tap for area football teams

Week 1 of the regular season in high school football is in the books. Now it is time to start thinking about the opening of the region schedule for many schools in Week 2.

Region 8-AA’s alignment blocks off the final nine games of the regular season for region games.

On the docket in Region 8-AA Friday includes Riverside Military playing host to Banks County, Jefferson entertains Dawson County, and Union County plays host to Rabun County. In Region 8-A, Lakeview Academy visits Towns County.

Region 8-AAAA continues on in its region-only schedule with Habersham Central paying a visit to Heritage.

In Region 7-AAA, East Hall visits White County, Flowery Branch visits Lumpkin County, and West Hall visits Pickens.

In non-region games this week, Buford visits North Hall, Commerce plays host to Morgan County, Gainesville plays host to Franklin County, Jackson County plays host to Sonoraville, and Johnson visits North Forsyth.

North Georgia Christian is also in action this week as the Chargers visit Covenant Christian.

Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves are trying to stay in the race for the NL wildcard with a three-game series at the Florida Marlins beginning tonight.

Tim Hudson will make his season debut for the Braves on Tuesday night against Anibal Sanchez.

On Thursday, Tommy Hanson (9-3, 3.15 ERA) will pitch for Atlanta. Hanson dropped his last outing last Friday night, against the Philadelphia Phillies, after throwing only two innings and allowing only one earned run in a 4-2 loss. Thursday’s starter for Atlanta is Derek Lowe (13-8, 4.38) against Florida’s Ricky Nolasco (9-8, 5.30).

Then on Friday, the Braves play host to the Cincinnati Reds to begin a three-game series. During the final five weeks of the regular season, the Braves have remaining home series against the New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, Florida Marlins and Washington Nationals.

Gwinnett Braves

The Gwinnett Braves are trying to win the International League Southern Division title with seven more games remaining in the regular season. The Triple-A G-Braves wrap up a series at the Durham Bulls today, followed by a three-game series at the Norfolk Tides on Wednesday-Friday. Gwinnett wraps up the regular season with a three-game home series against the Charlotte Knights on Saturday-Sept. 7 in Lawrenceville.

Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons play their home exhibition game against the Baltimore Ravens at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday night at the Georgia Dome. Atlanta opens the regular season against the Miami Dolphins on Sept. 13 at the Georgia Dome.
