Sherby: Hammer your opponent's weakness

A player without a plan is a player in trouble.

One singles strategy you might use in your next match is: Hammer the weakness.

In the warm-up, determine if your opponent is much stronger on either the forehand or the backhand groundstroke. Occassionally there is an out-of-balance, marked difference to be exploited.

Once this weakness is identified, your plan should be to hammer that weakness until it breaks down under constant pressure. Be relentless; there should be no doubt that this is your sole objective in the match. Serve to this side, rally to this side, and attack this side.

Incidently, continually playing to an opponent’s stronger side is suicide. Don’t do this unintentionally.
