General manager Josh Byrnes says the Padres are talking with reliever Micah Owings, a Gainesville High graduate.

Byrnes declined further comment. It is not clear whether the sides have agreed to a deal.

The NL West champion Arizona Diamondbacks declined to tender Owings a contract after last season.

Owings made his major league debut with Arizona in 2007, when Byrnes was GM of the Diamondbacks.
