Martin leads North Georgia to upset win over Columbus

Kelsey Martin slid in her eighth goal of the season to lead the North Georgia College and State University women’s soccer team to a 1-0 shut out victory against No. 3-ranked Columbus State University on Wednesday in Columbus.

The win marks the Lady Saints’ first victory against a nationally ranked, top five team, and is the first Peach Belt Conference loss for the Cougars since 2005.

Kirsten Ross picked up the victory in goal for the Lady Saints (9-3-2, 5-2-1 PBC) and recorded four saves in the game.

Kelly Nimmo notched five saves for Columbus State (12-1-1, 6-1) and allowed North Georgia’s only goal.

Columbus State outshot North Georgia 12-8 and held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks in the losing effort.

North Georgia plays host to Flagler College on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Dahlonega.
