Paul Malquist, a recent graduate of Gainesville High, took first place in the pole vault at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals last weekend in Greensboro, N.C.

Malquist vaulted a height of 16 feet, 8 inches, the same height that won him the Class AAA state championship and broke the all-classification state record earlier this year.
