The Lady Lions (28-4) earned the spot in the national tournament by winning the Great South Athletic Conference title. The Lady Lions knocked off Maryville College 3-1 in the tournament final to claim the league title and the NCAA bid. Sarah Lane, a 2004 Johnson High graduate, was named the tournament’s most valuable player.
Piedmont picked up several other league awards. The Lady Lions had three players on the All-Conference Team (Lane, Jill Sparger and Tyler Baldonado), four players on the All-Academic Team (Lane, Sparger, Baldonado and Nikki Cox) and claimed both the league’s Freshman Player of the Year (Kalin DeMarrais) and Coach of the Year (Katie O’Brien) distinctions.
Brenau comes back
The Brenau basketball team came back from a seven-point halftime deficit to defeat Tennessee Temple University 59-57 Tuesday night in Gainesville.
Sophomore Paige Cooper led the way for the Golden Tigers with 15 points and nine rebounds. Junior Lori Pope chipped in 12 points and six rebounds and Sarah Ledford added 10 points.
Brenau finished the game with a dismal 33 percent shooting and was only 2-of-17 from the 3-point line.
Gainesville High to have sendoff
Gainesville High School will have an Elephant Walk at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the high school as the Red Elephant football team prepares to go to Westminster for the first round of the Class AAA state playoffs. Parents and the community are encouraged to attend.
Pep rally planned
The North Hall Trojan football community pep rally will be held Thursday at 6 p.m. at Weaver Farm. Parking will be available at Mount Vernon Elementary. The Trojans play host to McNair High at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Tickets are $8 and can be purchased at the North Hall High office during school hours.

Trinity Trot set for this weekend
The 13th Annual Trinity Trot will be Saturday at 2 p.m. on the campus of Gainesville State College.
There will be a one-mile run to follow the 2 p.m. 5K for those 12-and-under.
Registration forms are available at area gyms as well as McEver Road United Methodist Church. Forms can also be downloaded at www.mcever
umc.org. Cost is $17 prior to race day and $20 the day of the race.
State matchup on T.V.
The Georgia-Georgia Tech football game in Atlanta on Saturday, Nov. 24, will be televised by ABC (WSB-2) at 3:30 p.m.
This will be Georgia’s first appearance on ABC this season and 66th appearance all time. Georgia’s all-time record on ABC is 39-24-2.
