Local roundup: Gainesville notches first win

Allan Dockery led Gainesville with 14 points and eight rebounds as the Red Elephants beat Class AAAAA Alpharetta 53-46 Wednesday.

Down by two at the end of the first quarter, Gainesville used a 17-9 run in the second quarter to pull ahead 28-22 at halftime.

The second quarter run would prove to be the difference as the Red Elephants (1-1) only outscored Alpharetta (0-2) 25-24 in the second half.

George Manomano added 11 points for the Red Elephants who next play at 1:30 p.m. Saturday against Class AAAA’s Marist.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Northview 55, West Hall 37

After leading 23-18 at halftime, Northview (1-1) put away the Lady Spartans (0-2) with a big third quarter Wednesday morning at the South Forsyth Turkey Shootout tournament.

Jayla Moon led West Hall with 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Kim Smigelsky added 10 points.

Ten players scored for Northview, led by Kristi Pfahl’s 16 points.

The Lady Spartans return to tournament action at 9 a.m. Saturday.

COLLEGE SWIMMING
Brenau swim team cruises

The Brenau University swim team defeated LaGrange College last Saturday in a dual meet in LaGrange.

The final score was 75-29, as the Golden Tigers won eight of the 10 races in the meet.

Ali Sapp recorded a personal best 2:23.66 in winning the 200-yard and also was part of the winning 200-yard medley relay.

Lindsay Dupree won four events (200 freestyle, 100 butterfly, and both relays) and Sarah Fell won three, (50 freestyle, 200 free relay, and 200 medley relay).

 

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Ledford leads Brenau to victory

The Brenau Golden Tigers ran their season record to 3-1 with a 70-61 win against Spelman College on Tuesday night in Gainesville.

Gilmer High grad Sarah Ledford led the Golden Tigers with a career high 26 points. Paige Cooper added 18 points and six rebounds.

Lori Pope came off the bench and contributed seven points for Brenau.

Brenau will travel to Marion, Ala. next Monday to play Judson College.
