Local Golf: Fowler in top 10

SAVANNAH — Gainesville’s Alan Fowler shot a 5-over 77 on Saturday in the third round the Georgia State Golf Association’s 89th Annual Georgia Amateur Championship at The Landings Club’s Deer Creek course, dropping him into a five-way tie for 10th place.

Fowler was tied for second through the first two rounds, played Thursday and Friday, after shooting a 70 and 72, respectively.

With a three-day score of 219, Fowler finds himself trailing leader and Savannah native Doug Hanzel (212) by seven strokes heading into today’s final round.

CHATTAHOOCHEE MEN’S GOLF ASSOCIATION: The CMGA hosted a three best-ball, aggregated net-strokes game Wednesday at the Chattahoochee Golf Club.

First place went to the team of Carlyle Cox, Bill Sutton, Dave Gleason and Rolf Legbandt with a score of -37. Gary Palmer, Ed Pledger, Glynn Rogers and Dave Long teamed up to card a -36 and earn second place.

With a score of -33, the team of Greg Taira, Bob Henderson, Leroy Harper and Don Wells took third while the team of Doug Glidden, Doug Van, Dick Freeman and Bob Layne shot a -30 for fourth.

Fifth place went to Dick Bachman, Ron Bachman, Jim Hollobaugh and Clay Bartlett with a -29 and sixth place went to Jimmy Johnson, John T. Smith, Denny Momper and Bob Watson with a -24.

Closest to the pin winners were Watson on No. 3, Don Sorrell on No. 5, Long on No. 12 and Jim Carroll on No. 17.

DOGFIGHT: The Wednesday Dogfight was held at Chicopee Woods Golf Course this week.

Lou Vega tied Stan Rawl for first place in the individual event with a score of 64. Walter Hope and Mike Tilson each carded a 65 to tie for third.

The team of Vega, Hope and Don Schrum fired a 22-under par to win the team event.
Hope, Tilson and Jim Arendt each won closest to the pin honors.

LUNA: The Luna’s Tuesday Golf Group played at Chicopee Woods Golf Course this week.

First place went to the team of Stan Davidson Jr., Nelson Wright, Chad Pierce and Jim Cornett. The team of Joe Campbell, Frank House, Doug McMahan and Royce Deaton took second place honors. Tom Sexton, Tommy Lowery, Don Smallwood and

Doug Van teamed up to tie Mark Thornton, Cleve Brown, Johnny Nix and Stan Davidson Sr. for third place.

Closest to the pin winners were Lowery on No. 4, Davidson Sr. on No. 7, McMahan on No. 2 and Brown on No. 5.

CLGA: The Chattahoochee Ladies Golf Association played a low-gross, low-net event Tuesday at Chattahoochee Golf Club.

The low-gross, first-flight winner was Ann Hollobaugh with second place honors going to Ann White.

The low-net winner was Violet Reynolds and second place went to Joan Stone.

In the second flight, Alice Parish won the low gross with Nancy Negley taking second. Ricke Von Stroud won the low-net event with Jewell Floyd taking second.

Closest to the pin winners were Carolyn Palmer on No. 3 and Ann Hollobaugh on No. 17.
