Round 1 is in the books at the traditional wrestling state champions at the Gwinnett Arena, and a number of local athletes are moving on to Friday’s state quarterfinals.
In Class AAA, White County has five wrestlers that won first-round matches and will wrestle in the quarterfinals. Caleb Morris (130 pounds), Michael Limbaugh (135), Bradley McDougald (160), Seth Lee (171) and Tyler Reeves (189) have all advanced.
For Lumpkin County, Alex Ward (112), Michael Hilliard (152), Lee Cagle (160) and Travis Burton (215) have all advanced to the quarterfinals. Tyler Kratzer (125), Shane Doster (171) and Lee Sisson (189) all won first-round matches from North Hall.
Chestatee's Jose Reyes (103) and Daniel Moreno (171) are still alive for the state title, while West Hall’s Tanner Yates (140) and Logan Herford (145) also advanced.
In Class AA, Jefferson wrestlers won 10 of 12 first round matches. Dragons senior Cason Thurmond (125) is still in the hunt for his fourth consecutive state title.
The quarterfinals begin at 11 a.m. Friday and the semifinals are at 6:30 p.m. at the Gwinnett Arena. Wrestlers that lost in the first round can still wrestle back for as high as a third place finish.
