This week: Softball, volleyball start state playoffs

For two fall sports, the time for state playoff play is upon them.

Softball and volleyball both kick off the opening rounds of their respective state playoffs this week.

Class AA’s top-ranked, and back-to-back state champion, Buford (17-4) plays host to Sonoraville at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in Buford in the opening round of the playoffs.

First round playoff series consist of a best-of-three format.

Last week, the Lady Wolves won the Region 8-AA championship with wins against Lovett and Blessed Trinity.

In Class A, Commerce (10-10) faces Mount Paran in the opening round of the playoffs.

White County (19-8) will represent Region 7-AAA as the No. 2 seed in the playoffs and plays host to Ridgeland, as a result of losing the region championship game 2-1 against Creekview. No. 3 seed West Hall (20-12) faces Region 6-AAA runner-up Heritage-Catoosa in the first round of the playoffs in Ringgold.

Region 7-AAA champion Creekview (24-7) plays host to Central-Carroll in the first round and No. 4 seed West Forsyth (14-10) visits Region 6-AAA champion Lakview-Fort Oglethorpe.

In Region 8-AAA, Jackson County faces St. Pius X.

In volleyball, Creekview, West Forsyth, Flowery Branch and North Hall all qualified for the state sectionals as the top four finishers from the Area 7-AAA tournament last Saturday at Flowery Branch.

The state sectionals for North Hall and Flowery Branch will be held at an Area 3 school the site of which has yet to be determined. Creekview and West Forsyth will play host to first round playoff matchups.

North Hall (27-14) finished third in the area with wins against Lambert and Flowery Branch on the final day of play. The Lady Falcons (20-18) lost to the Lady Trojans in the fourth place match.

In football, Region 8-AA returns to action after a bye week. Banks County visits Jefferson, Riverside plays host to Fannin County and Union County plays host to Oglethorpe County. Commerce visits Wesleyan and Towns County plays host to Georgia Military in Region 8-A.

In Region 7-AAA, Chestatee plays host to White County, Flowery Branch entertains East Hall, West Forsyth visits Johnson, Lumpkin County visits West Hall and North Hall visits Pickens. Habersham Central visits Monroe Area in Region 8-AAAA.
