Scoreboard: Gainesville volleyball wins one in Winder tourney

The Gainesville High volleyball team picked up a win against Madison County 2-1 (18-25, 25-23, 15-7) on Saturday at the Winder-Barrow tournament in Winder. The Lady Red Elephants lost matches to Winder-Barrow 2-0 (25-11, 25-20) and Monroe-Area 2-0 (25-11, 28-26).

In the win, Taylor Ricketts led the Lady Red Elephants with 11 assists, 13 kills, nine digs and fives aces for Gainesville. Loren Thomas had 10 assists and three kills for the Lady Red Elephants, and Kiki Thompson added five assists, four kills and five digs.

Jazmine Jones had five blocks, Katelyn Whelchel added six assists and four kills, and Kate Callahan had three assists and three kills for Gainesville.

Against Winder-Barrow, Ricketts had four assists, nine kills, six digs and two aces for Gainesville. Thomas had six assists, and Thompson added five digs and three assists.

Against Monroe-Area, Ricketts had eight digs, seven kills, five assists and two aces. Thomas had six assists and three kills for the Lady Red Elephants. Thompson had five kills, six digs and Jones had four blocks for Gainesville.

Gainesville plays in a four-team play date at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Flowery Branch.

Buford wins Brookwood Invitational

Class AA’s No. 1 ranked Buford (20-2-1) knocked off Class AAAAA’s No. 1 top-ranked North Gwinnett 3-2 to win the platinum bracket of the Brookwood Invitational Saturday at Parkview High in Lilburn. Melissa Dickie earned the win for the Wolves allowing only five hits and recorded seven strikeouts from the pitching circle.

Alysha Rudnik led Buford at the plate with three hits, a double and an RBI. Karly Fullem had a two RBI double for the Lady Wolves.

Dickie earned her first win of the day by throwing a one-hit, complete game shutout. Rudnik was 3-for-3 with a triple and three runs scored. Lexi Overstreet (double, 2 RBI), Whitney Holman (2-for-4, RBI) and Chelsie Thomas (3-for-4, two runs scored) all led the Lady Wolves at the plate.

Karly Fullem (9-1) earned the win allowing only three hits for the Lady Wolves. Overstreet and Rudnik each finished 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead Buford at the plate. Holman was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Buford plays host to Lovett at 6 p.m. Monday.
