Roundup: Lakeview tops Tallulah, qualifies for state

The Lakeview Academy volleyball team qualified for the Class A/AA North Sectional with a 2-0 (25-22, 25-20) win over Tallulah Falls on Saturday in the Area 7-A/AA tournament at North Oconee High School.

Later in the day, the Lady Lions fell to North Oconee (26-24, 25-22), and will enter the next week’s tournament in Savannah as the area’s No. 4 seed.

Louisa Jacobs (four kills), Caitlyn Wells (three kills, four aces) and Janelle Francis (five aces) guided to Lakeview to a win the first game of the day.

In the loss to the Lady Titans, Francis contributed eight kills, Jacobs had four kills and five digs, and Elif Alyanak had nine assists.

Jacobs and Alyanak were also named to the All-Area first team, while Francis earned a spot on the second team.

Lakeview returns to action Saturday against the No. 1 seed from Area 2-A/AA.

Softball

Buford 5, Calhoun 3

The Buford High softball team qualified for the state tournament with a win against the Yellow Jackets on Saturday in the Class AA North Sectionals at Alto Park in Rome. Lady Wolves (29-6-1) senior Melissa Higginbotham earned the win allowing eight hits, and two walks in the pitching circle.

Alysha Rudnik led Buford offensively going 3-for-5 and driving in two runs. Higginbotham went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored.

Lady Wolves catcher Ashley Razey had two hits and an RBI. Chelsie Thomas went 3-for-4 with a double for Buford.

Buford faces an opponent yet to be determined at 2 p.m. Thursday at the South Commons Softball Complex in Columbus.

Buford 2, Morgan County 1

Higginbotham allowed only three hits and two walks for the Lady Wolves on Friday night in Rome.

Thomas had a double and scored a run for Buford. Razey and Rudnik each had two hits and a walk.

Buford 4, Rockmart 3

The Lady Wolves pounded out 10 hits to earn a win in their first game in the Class AA North Sectional on Friday night in Rome.

Jennifer Tucker and Rudnik each had two hits and scored a run for the Lady Wolves. Razey had a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Brandi Hellemn added an RBI for the Lady Wolves.
