Prep scoreboard: Flowery Branch runs well at Westminster

The Flowery Branch boys cross country team opened the season with a second place finish in a 10 team field, including three defending state champions, Saturday at the Kosh Classic at The Westminster Schools in Atlanta.

Class AAA’s defending champion Westminster finished first (48 points) followed by No. 2 ranked Flowery Branch (60). Lovett placed third. Class AA’s defending champion Wesleyan and Class A defending champion Our Lady of Mercy finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Daniel Martinez led the Falcons with a fourth place finish and Kenny Slavik placed ninth.

Softball

Buford 12, South Forsyth 1

Buford starting pitcher Melissa Dickie pitched three innings and only allowed one hit Saturday at the Hawk/Bulldog Invitational at South Forsyth High in Cumming. Trisha Warbington threw two innings without allowing a hit for the Wolves.

Buford’s Whitney Wolfe was 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored. Whitney Holman drove in a pair of runs and scored twice for the Wolves. Chelsie Thomas and Brandi Hellemn each added two hits for Buford.

Central Gwinnett 0

Karly Fullem got the win in the circle for Buford in its second game of the Hawk/Bulldog Invitational at South Forsyth High in Cumming. Fullem struck out 10 in the complete-game victory.

Freshman Lexi Overstreet led the Lady Wolves at the plate going 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.

Brandi Hellemn and Whitney Wolfe each went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Holman went 2-for-3.

Loganville 2, Buford 1

Th e Lady Wolves ended their day-long tournament with Melissa Dickie picking up her first loss of the season.

Dickie struck out seven and allowed four hits.

Leading the way at the plate for Buford (4-2) was Samantha Ramey whose double accounted for the only run of the game.

Buford next plays at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Jefferson.

Jackson County 19, Campbell 6 (3 inn.)

Jessica Laird, Haley Shinall, Becca Nelson and Brittany Sims each had two hits to lift the Lady Panthers (2-4) to a win Saturday at Mill Creek. Sims finished the game with a triple and four RBIs. Laird drove in three runs for Jackson County.

Jackson County plays host to Morgan County Tuesday in Jefferson.

Grayson 2, Jackson County 0

Shinall and Griggs each had a hit for Jackson County. Shinall finished with a complete game on the mound and only allowed three hits.

Duluth 6, Jackson County 2

Nelson finished the game with a pair of hits for the Lady Panthers. Ashleigh Lance added an RBI double for Jackson County.

Houston County 7, Jackson County 3 (Friday)

Nelson led the Lady Panthers with a 2-for-3 night at the plate with a pair of RBIs.

Volleyball

West Hall drops three matches at play date

The Lady Spartans defeated Clarke Central 2-0 (25-18, 25-21) for their only win at an Oconee County play date Saturday in Watkinsville. West Hall lost to Oconee County 2-0 (25-9, 25-13), then to Greenbrier 2-1 (25-14, 20-25, 25-16), and to Hart County 2-0 (25-16, 25-17).

Abigail Grindle led the Lady Spartans offensively during the play date. West Hall’s defensive leader was Jessica Hollis.

North Hall splits pair in Forsyth tourney

The North Hall volleyball team split its first two matches in pool play Friday in the Forsyth County Volleyball tournament with wins against West Forsyth 2-0 (25-15, 27-25) followed by a loss to Class AAAAA’s Centennial. North Hall’s Kathryn Bell had nine assists and a pair of kills against the Lady Wolverines. Evann Rowland added four kills and three blocks.

Against Centennial, Betsy Burns had three blocks and two kills.
