Prep scoreboard: Dawson County girls win region title

Senior Kasey Holbrook carded an 85 to win her third consecutive individual region championship and help Dawson County’s girls golf team to the Region 8-AA Region championship on Monday.

Charley Whitmore’s 102 gave the Lady Tigers a combined score of 187, which was seven strokes better than region runner-up Rabun County.

Dawson County’s Katie Turner carded a 104 and Katie Sowers finished with a 110.

The win ensures the Lady Tigers of their fourth consecutive trip to the Class AA state tournament, which will be played on May 5 at Gold Creek Golf Course in Dawsonville.

Baseball

Gainesville 4, West Forsyth 0

Senior Justin Fordham struck out 12 batters and gave up only two hits as Gainesville increased its winning streak to four games on Monday at Ivey Watson Park.

Fordham threw just 82 pitches and didn’t allow a walk in a complete-game performance.

Max Joseph led the Red Elephants (16-5, 15-2 Region 7-AAA) at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a solo home run. Zach Bennett also went 3-for-3 for Gainesville.

The Red Elephants visit East Hall at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Chestatee 12, East Hall 2

Joey Switzer went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored to lead the War Eagles past East Hall on Monday.

Kevin Clifford gave up five hits and struck out three batters to earn the win on the mound for Chestatee (3-15, 2-14 Region 7-AAA).

With Chestatee leading 3-2, the War Eagles blew the game open in the third inning by scoring three runs and chasing East Hall starting pitcher Ken Wise from the game.

James Kibbler and Clifford each hit RBI doubles in the third inning.

Chris Cornett had two RBIs and Justin Roper had two hits for the Vikings (7-14, 6-11).

Chestatee visits White County at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, while East Hall plays host to Gainesville at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

White County 4, Lumpkin County 2

Brantley Gee improved his record to 4-1 by pitching a complete-game four-hitter for White County on Monday in Cleveland.

Kevin Frederick went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Zack Messmore was 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored a run for the Warriors (12-9, 10-7 Region 7-AAA).

White County plays host to Chestatee at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Johnson 9, Pickens 5

Michael Lorentz hit his first career home run in the fourth inning to help lead the Knights past Pickens on Monday in Oakwood.

Jared Stone had three RBIs and David Jones and Will Rowlett each had two RBIs for Johnson (8-13, 5-12 Region 7-AAA). Rowlett picked up the win on the mound.

The Knights visit West Forsyth at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, while Pickens plays host to Flowery Branch at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
