Prep roundup: Riverside ousted in region tournament

The Riverside Military Academy basketball team lost in the semifinals of the Georgia Independent Schools Association Region North AAA tournament 70-53 to Mount Vernon on Thursday night in Sandy Springs.

Charlie Riley’s 18 points led the Eagles (11-11). Richard Tribble added 13 for Riverside Military and Steven Frady added 10.

Mount Vernon led the Eagles 20-16 after the first quarter and extended its lead to 39-26 at halftime.

Amin Stevens led all scorers with a game-high 30 for Mount Vernon.

With a win in a consolation game today, the Eagles enter the state tournament as the No. 3 seed. Riverside’s opponent was still to be determined on Thursday night.

North Hall girls 1,
Forsyth Central 0

Tess Patton scored the game’s only goal for the Lady Trojans (1-0-1) on a breakaway and an assist from Laura Lane on Wednesday night to top Class AAAAA’s Lady Bulldogs.

North Hall was solid defensively, holding the Lady Bulldogs to three shots on goal in the first half. Despite allowing 10 shots in the second half, the Lady Trojans still managed to keep Forsyth Central out of the net.

Mary Mancin stopped 12 shots to record the shutout.

North Hall visits Greater Atlanta Christian at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 22.

Stephens County girls 1,
Chestatee 0

Stephens County’s Hanna Martin scored on a free kick from 20 yards in the first half on Thursday night in Gainesville.

Daniela Sotelo’s header off of a corner kick for Chestatee missed in the second half. It was the closest the Lady War Eagles (0-1) came to scoring in the season opener.

Chestatee freshman goalkeeper Sarah Brothers played well with seven saves in goal.

The Lady War Eagles visit Class AAAAA’s Mill Creek at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Stephens County 0

Evan Lawalin scored the only goal of the game off of a free kick by Junior Medina in the sixth minute on Thursday night in Gainesville.

Tyler Esson earned a shutout in goal for the War Eagles (1-0) with seven saves, including one save on a penalty kick.

Chestatee visits Mill Creek at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday

Gainesville girls 3,
Clarke Central 1

Raquel Castillo scored two goals for Gainesville in its first round win against the Lady Gladiators in the Oconee Cup Thursday night in Watkinsville.

Drew Blakley-White also scored for the Lady Red Elephants (2-0) and Laura Demby had two assists. Gainesville goalie Hong Tran recorded nine saves in goal.

Gainesville advances to the finals of the Oconee Cup at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday against an opponent still to be determined.
