Lakeland Baptist Church Pastor Brian Rhodes discusses the Flowery Branch City Council’s decision to deny his request to relocate his burgeoning church to a rental space at 5556 Atlanta Highway, which stands in a highway business zone where churches are prohibited under a current Flowery Branch zoning ordinance.

Lakeview Academy got knocked out of the Class A/AA state volleyball playoffs in the first round Saturday, losing to No. 6 Savannah Christian, 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-9).

Janelle Francis led the Lady Lions (20-13) with seven kills, 10 digs and five blocks. Elif Alyanak added 13 assists, Jillie Pascual had 12 digs, and Louisa Jacobs had five digs and a pair of kills.

The Lady Lions’ season is now complete.

Cross country
Falcons teams finish fifth

Flowery Branch’s cross country teams each notched fifth-place finishes Saturday at the Alcovy Last Chance meet in Covington.

Daniel Martinez led the boys team, which finished third among Class AAA teams, with a ninth-place individual finish (16 minutes, 50 seconds).

Ali Wellborn was the top finisher for the girls — also third among Class AAA teams — taking 12th place individually (20:58).

The Falcons teams return to the trail Thursday in the Region 7-AAA meet at Unicoi State Park in Helen.

Central Fellowship 7

The Riverside Military Academy football team remained undefeated in region play, beating Central Fellowship 41-7 in Macon on Saturday night.

The Eagles (5-3, 3-0 GISA Class AAA North) visit Tattnall Square this Friday.
