North Hall, Flowery Branch volleyball teams play in second round of state Tuesday

North Hall volleyball coach Emi Hughes said it herself, “(Today’s) match against Class AAA’s No. 1-ranked St. Pius X is a David vs. Goliath scenario.”

St. Pius X (34-14) has won five-straight games and were, between Aug. 22 and Sept. 18, winners of 17 straight.

Out of the 144 games played in their 48 matches this season, the Region 1-AAA champion Golden Lions have lost only 45.
For the Trojans, however, who they play matters little compared to how they play.

“We’re going to take it one game at a time like we have all season,” Hughes said. “We’re going to focus on playing North Hall volleyball rather than focus on playing the No. 1 team in the state.

“Hopefully our best will be good enough (today).”

North Hall knocked off Baldwin (25-12, 25-15, 25-11) on Saturday to earn the right to play St. Pius in the second round of the state tournament.

The game will be played at 6 tonight at St. Pius X.

“We’re excited to still be in the tournament,” Hughes said. “We feel good about our chances because when you think about it, what do we have to lose? We aren’t the No. 1 team in the state.”

At the start of the high school volleyball season, Flowery Branch coach Bryan Mavis said that, among other things, a goal of his 2009 squad was to make it to the state quarterfinals.

After a 3-0 win against Richmond Hill (25-9, 25-17, 25-13), the Falcons (21-18) are now just one more win away from reaching that goal.

This year marks the Falcons’ second-straight appearance in the state round of 16; they will face Riverwood at 6 tonight in Atlanta.

Much like their opponents tonight, the Raiders (24-16) are no strangers to the round of 16 with this being their third trip in a row.
They lost to Region 7-AAA’s Creekview in 2008 and Columbus in 2007.

The Raiders made this year’s round of 16 with a 3-0 win against Arabia Mountain (25-11, 25-8, 25-7), a nice rebound after losing their region title game 3-1 to St. Pius X (25-15, 21-25, 25-18, 25-11).
