Local roundup: Gainesville wins opener

The Gainesville High girls basketball team opened its season with a 54-44 win over Roswell on Saturday in the South Forsyth Turkey Shootout.

Jaymee Carnes led the team with 30 points and 16 rebounds. Madison Strictland added 8 points and Taylor Ricketts scored six points. The Lady Red Elephants play again Wednesday at 6 p.m. against the winner of the South Forsyth/Alpharetta game.

Meadowcreek 47, Chestatee 36

The Lady War Eagles had two girls with double-doubles Saturday, but it wasn’t enough to win their season opener at the South Forsyth Turkey Shootout. Kasey Smith led Chestatee with 13 points and 14 rebounds and Erica Lackey added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Lady War Eagles will play again Tuesday in the Shootout.

Forsyth Central 34, West Hall 32

The Lady Spartans started their season with a loss, falling to Forsyth Central in the South Forsyth Turkey Shootout. Jayla Moon led the team with 13 points.

West Hall plays again in the Shootout 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Boys basketball
Roswell 68, Gainesville 67 (OT)

The Red Elephants opened their season in exciting, but ultimately disappointing, fashion, losing to Roswell in the South Forsyth Turkey Shootout.

George Manomano led the team with 18 points and Allan Dockery added 16 points.

Gainesville will play again 1:30 p.m Wedensday. Their opponent is yet to be determined.

Women’s college basketball
Tennessee Wesleyan 75, Brenau 68

The Brenau Golden Tigers lost in double overtime at Tennessee Wesleyan on Saturday, 75-68.

Brenau had the lead at halftime and the game was tied at the end of regulation 58-58. It was 66-66 at the end of the first overtime and Wesleyan went on a 9-2 run in the second overtime to claim the win.
