The North Hall boys basketball team’s second-half rally came up short as Lakeview Academy held on to win 68-52 and claim third place Friday in the Lanierland tournament at Gainesville High School.

The No. 3 seed Trojans (9-7) cut the deficit to as little as nine points with about three minutes to play, but the No. 5 seed Lions (8-4) sealed the win by hitting their final eight free throws.

Both teams struggled offensively in the first half, and North Hall didn’t score its first points until nearly four minutes into the contest. A nine-point burst over the final three minutes of the second quarter helped the Trojans make it 27-17 at halftime.

Lakeview senior forward Tre Gober (19 points) and junior guard Drew Cottrell (17) hit back-to-back 3-pointers early in the third quarter to extend their team’s lead to 20 points.

North Hall senior guard Evan Easton, however, scored 12 of his game-high 24 points during the period to keep the Trojans in the game. Freshman guard Griffin Neville scored all 10 of his points in the fourth quarter, including a 3-pointer that pulled the Trojans within 60-50.

But Cottrell hit six straight free throws, while senior guard Ryan Lackey provided another two in the final minute.
