OAKWOOD- When Oakwood schools Johnson and West Hall play, there is already a built-in rivalry. Volleyball is no exception.

The Lady Knights and Lady Spartans tangled Tuesday not only to try and one-up the school on the other side of town, but also to gain a clean sweep in a four-team match against East Hall and Gilmer at West Hall.

Johnson (15-6, 6-1 in Area 7-AAA) earned the win 25-14, 25-18 behind strong net play and good communication, giving fourth-year Lady Knights coach Deb Eidson her first victory against West Hall. The Lady Knights also picked up wins against East Hall 25-18, 25-21 and against Gilmer 25-9, 25-14.

The Lady Knights are now still in the running to earn the No. 1 spot from Area 7-AAA heading into the Class AAA state tournament.

"That's been our goal all season is to earn the top spot in the region," Eidson said.

Jordan Gustavel had nine kills, a block and one ace for the Lady Knights in the victory. Shelley Farley added 17 assists and three aces for Johnson.

The Lady Knights took control of the match early, keeping a steady lead in the first game. Johnson led by as much as 15-5 en route to a comfortable victory. Mary Fiorentino had five kills, and Katie Clark added six kills and a blocked shot for the Lady Knights.

"They are hitting the ball so well right now," Eidson said. "I just tell them to stay low and swing hard."

Abigail Grindle had eight kills and three digs for West Hall. Kristen Holmes (three kills, block), Erica Grainger (nine assists, kill) and Jessica Hollis (eight digs) all played well for the Lady Spartans.

West Hall faces Clarke Central at 5 p.m. on Thursday at Athens Academy in Athens. Johnson faces Loganville in the Heritage High Classic at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Conyers.


Johnson overtakes East Hall

The Lady Knights had to overcome a late deficit in Game 2 against the Lady Vikings to earn the win. Johnson trailed by as much as 18-16 late in the game before taking the lead permanently and securing the match and a 25-18, 25-21 win. Farley had 11 assists, four aces for Johnson and Fiorentino had four aces, three kills. Annabeth Peace (four kills, six aces), Clark (seven kills) and Laura Gazaway (three aces) also led the Lady Knights.

"I think we took them (East Hall) for granted," Eidson said. "East Hall is going to surprise a lot of people."


Johnson knocks off Gilmer

Lady Knights setter Shelley Farley played at a blistering pace with 18 assists and six aces in a 25-9, 25-14 win against the Lady Bobcats. Gustavel (eight kills), Clark (seven kills) and Peace (six kills) all played a part in the win for Johnson.


West Hall beats Gilmer

Jessica Hollis had six digs and McKenzie Jackson had five kills for the Lady Spartans en route to a 25-16, 25-22 win against the Lady Bobcats. Grindle (three aces, kill, three digs) and Grainger (two kills, four assists, three digs) also led the way for West Hall.


West Hall edges East Hall

Grainger had 12 assists, four kills and five aces for the Lady Spartans en route to a 25-23, 18-25, 25-11 win against the Lady Vikings. Grindle added 10 kills, three digs and an ace for West Hall. Hollis had eight digs.
