Jefferson softball opens with pair of wins

The Jefferson High softball team began play in the Jordan Invitational in Columbus by winning their first two games Friday.

In Game 1, the Lady Dragons defeated Woodland Henry from Region 3-AAAA, 6-3.

Kara Derry earned the win from the circle, striking out four. Morgan McKinney led the Lady Dragons at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Anna Alexander, Lindsey Miles and Summer Bartek each had an RBI for Jefferson.

The Lady Dragons followed up their win in Game 1 with a Game 2 defeat of Region 6-AAA’s Shaw, 9-1.

In that game, McKinney earned the win from the circle, striking out seven.

Catherine Knight and Kasey McDonald hit back-to-back home runs and both finished the game 2-for-2.

Jordyn Whitfield chipped in two RBIs for the Lady Dragons, going 3-for-3 on the day.

Jefferson (2-0) will enter the gold medal bracket today and face Heritage at 8 a.m., Marion at 11:30 a.m. and Blakely at 4:45 p.m.
