The Chestatee High wrestling team captured the Area 8-AAAA duals championship at Monroe Area High on Saturday and berth in the Class AAAA state duals meet, starting on Friday at the Macon Centreplex. In the finals, the War Eagles topped Lumpkin County 55-15. Chestatee advanced to the championship match with wins against Stephens County (52-30) and against Johnson in the semifinals 56-22.
In the championship match, Bart Velazquez (113 pounds), Christian Zapatero (126), Tommy McCormack (160), Cody Humphries (172), Baker McCormack (182) and Grayson Entrekin (195) all won by way of a pin for the War Eagles.
In the semifinals, Velazquez (113), Zapatero (126), Trevor Comeaux (145), Tommy McCormack (160), Humphries (172), Entrekin (195) and Carter Groves (285) picked up a pin for Chestatee. Winning by pin in the opening in the match for Chestatee were Jose Reyes (106), Velazquez (113), Austin Donaldson (120), Zapatero (126), Tyler Burgess (132), Danny Tran (138) and Joshua Puckett (182).
AREA 4-AAA: North Hall entered as the No. 3 seed and finished in third place in the 4-AAA Duals on Saturday at Oconee County High in Watkinsville. The team fell to Oconee County in the semifinals, but defeated Jackson County 49-23 to capture the third place trophy.
East Hall went 2-2 at the 4-AAA Duals this weekend in Watkinsville. The Vikings started off with a strong performance against East Jackson, winning 46-26. Oconee County bested East Hall, but the team recovered to beat Franklin County 36-33. The Vikings fought hard, but lost to White County 36-39. East Hall is now 16-9 on the season.
Buford, the fifth seed in the duals, ended with a 3-2 record for the weekend. The Wolves defeated Elbert County 40-35, North Oconee 60-16, and Hart County 45-27. The team’s two losses came against Jackson County (47-30) and North Hall (49-26), making Buford’s overall record 13-10.
