West Hall’s volleyball team continued to turn its season around in a big way Saturday, going 4-0 at the East Hall Spikefest.
After starting the season 2-8, the Lady Spartans have now evened their record at 10-10 overall (1-2 Region 7-AAA) behind six consecutive victories.
The Lady Spartans have gone undefeated at the Spikefest each of the past three years.
Kelsi Jones led the way at the Spikefest, recording 51 kills, 15 aces and 27 digs. Alli Busbee added 68 assists.
West Hall received strong play from Kendall Courson, Olivia Davis, Mia McKensey and Julia Wunderlich. Davis and Emily Granger provided outstanding service.
The Lady Spartans picked up wins against Lumpkin County (25-16, 25-16), Prince Avenue (25-16, 25-21), Monroe Area (25-11, 25-18) and Gainesville (25-10, 24-26, 15-13).
West Hall returns to action Tuesday with home matches against St. Pius and Cross Keys. Play is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
HOST EAST HALL WINS THREE AT SPIKEFEST: The No. 9 East Hall Lady Vikings picked up wins against Athens Christian (17-25, 25-21,15-4), Winder Barrow (25-22,25-16) and Prince Avenue Christian (27-25,24-26,16-14) on Saturday at the East Hall Spikefest. The Lady Vikings’ only loss came against Johnson (15-25,25-17,14-16). East Hall improved to 20-11 (1-3 in region) on the season.
Tarryn Long had 10 points on serve with 2 aces, 57 kills, 3 assists, 4 blocks and 18 digs. Kara Hix had 18 points on serve with 6 aces. She also had 11 kills, 5 assists and 72 digs. Ashleigh Burnett scored 35 points on serve with 5 aces. She also had 6 kills, 2 assists and 27 digs. Jessica Chmiel had 13 points scored on serve with 1 ace. She also had 3 assists and 9 digs.
The Lady Vikings return to Region 5-AAA play on Tuesday at Decatur against Decatur and Blessed Trinity.
JOHNSON SPLITS AT SPIKEFEST: Johnson went 2-2 on Saturday at the East Hall Spikefest.
The Lady Knights (7-15, 2-1 Area 8-AAAA) defeated Winder-Barrow (26-24, 25-21) behind Brook Balenger (4 aces, 4 kills) and Kelly Chance (4 assists, 3 digs) and overpowered East Hall (25-15, 17-25, 16-14) behind Chance (3 aces, 5 assists), Cassie McDonald (3 aces, 5 kills) and Kasey Gravitt (9 assists). Johnson lost its matches against Athens Christian (25-15, 16-25, 12-15) and Lanier (20-25, 13-25).
The Lady Knights play again on Tuesday at Madison County.
GAINESVILLE SPLITS AT SPIKEFEST: Gainesville went 3-1 on Saturday at the East Hall Spikefest. The Lady Red Elephants defeated Lanier (26-24, 20-25, 15-12) and Eastside (25-2, 25-14), but suffered losses against Habersham (18-25, 25-18, 7-15) and West Hall (12-25, 26-24, 13-15).
Tanai Watson (13 service points, 1 ace, 9 assists) and Sydney King (7 service points, 1 ace, 10 digs) led the way against Lanier, while Dallas Robson (9 service points, 3 aces, 8 assists), Bethany Whitenton (3 kills) and Alyssa Turner (24 service points, 2 aces, 4 kills) turned in strong efforts against Eastside.
TROJANS WIN THREE AT COLLINS HILL: North Hall defeated three of five opponents at the Collins Hill Classic, held Thursday at Saturday in Suwanee.
The Lady Trojans picked up wins against Dacula (25-10, 25-20) and Chamblee (25-23, 25-19) on Thursday following a loss to Mountain View (18-25, 14-25), then defeated West Forsyth (25-15, 25-14) Saturday before falling to North Gwinnett (23-25, 15-25).
Sydney Cleveland led the way with 22 kills, 9 digs and 2 blocks. Julie Daniels added 13 kills, 4 aces, 3 digs and 2 blocks. Jen Mullican had 14 kills, 3 blocks. Kristina Gregory had 30 assists, 4 aces and 2 kills. Juliana Paschall had a 19 pt service run, 6 aces and 3 blocks.
DRAGONS FINISH RUNNER-UP IN ROME: Jefferson fell to Southeast Whitfield 25-17, 25-23 in the championship match of the Toosa Invitational at Shorter University on Saturday in Rome, finishing the weekend with a 5-1 record. The Lady Dragons went 3-0 in pool play, recording wins over Adairsville (25-23, 25-13), Armuchee (25-10, 25-10) and Rome (25-22, 25-17) on Friday.
Then on Saturday, the Lady Dragons beat Pepperell (25-18, 25-17) and Gaylesville (Ala.) (25-21, 25-14) before falling to Whitfield.
In Friday’s matches, Grace Williamson finished with 24 attacks and 13 kills, Abby Wood finished with 18 attacks and eight kids and Bre Arbanas finished with 23 attacks and eight kills.
Jefferson is now 23-6 overall this season and hosts Morgan County and Flowery Branch Tuesday night at 5 p.m.
DANIELS POWERS BUFORD TO TWO WINS: Tessa Daniels erupted for three home runs and nine RBIs Saturday, leading Buford to a 10-4 win over South Forsyth and a 6-1 victory over Milton at Milton High School in Alpharetta.
Daniels finished the day 5 for 8 and also improved to 6-0 in the circle with a complete game — her fourth of the season — against South Forsyth. Daniels allowed five hits and two walks while striking out five batters. Her first home run of the day was a three-run shot in the fifth inning.
Morgan Walters went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run, Remington Hastey went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs, and Niki Cook went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a stolen base.
Bria Bush picked up the win in the circle against Milton. She allowed three hits and a walk while striking out eight batters in a complete game to improve to 5-1 on the season.
Daniels supported her with two-run homers in the first and seventh innings, while Jordan Deep went 3 for 4 with a homer, RBI and two runs.
Lea Edwards went 2 for 3 with a double and RBI and Samantha Thomas went 1 for 3.
Buford improved to 16-1 on the season. The Lady Wolves return to region play Tuesday when they host Fannin County at 5:55 p.m.
JEFFERSON PERFECT AT NORTH HALL: The Lady Dragons went 4-0 in a tournament at North Hall over the weekend. Jefferson defeated North Hall 5-2 and Fannin County 9-5 on Friday. Caitlin Cantrell picked up the win in the circle against the Lady Trojans, while Carolina Mitchell was the winning pitcher against the Rebels.
Jefferson defeated Towns County 9-0 in five innings on Saturday, followed by a 15-0 win against Lanier. Cantrell earned the win over the Indians, while Mitchell pitched three perfect innings for the victory in the second game.
Jefferson (16-4, 8-1 Region 8-AA) hosts Archer at 5:55 p.m. on Monday.
After winning the West Hall Invitational on Tuesday, the North Hall boys cross country team won the 2013 Furman XC Classic in Greenville, S.C. on Saturday.
Bryce Schuebert led the way for the Trojans with a time of 16:06.62, followed by Zack Hill (16:13.44), Quintin Miles (16:28.36), Bailey Pless (16:36.46) and Seth Chapman (16:45.81).
