Jefferson volleyball advances in area tournament

The Jefferson volleyball team defeated Hart County 2-0 (25-16, 25-20) in the Area 8-A/AA tournament Tuesday at North Oconee.

Jefferson (32-8) was led by Cassie Metcalf with eight aces and a kill, Amanda Daniel with five kills, 11 assists and an ace and Taylor Cramsey with two aces and five kills.

Eden Starnes had two kills, Sarah Wood added five kills and Savanna Holland had three kills and an assist for Jefferson, which plays the winner of North Oconee/Price Avenue at 6 p.m. Thursday at North Oconee.

NORTH HALL SPLITS AT HOME: Led by 20 assists and one ace from Kathryn Bell, the Lady Trojans defeated Johnson (25-9, 25-12) and lost to Oconee County (19-25, 23-25) on Tuesday.

Lauren Gregory had six kills and eight digs, Mary Kate Rushton had five kills and two digs, McKenna Rushton had two kills and three blocks and Tess Patron had five kills, three blocks and three digs for North Hall.

Sarah Paschall had 10 digs, Megan Cox had seven digs and six aces and Madison Copeland had three blocks for the Lady Trojans, who open play in the Area 8-AAA tournament at home Thursday.

LAKEVIEW ACADEMY OPENS REGION TOURNAMENT WITH WIN: Led by Mona Abraham’s three aces and two kills and Jamie Nixon’s two aces and four kills, the Lady Lions defeated Rabun County 2-0 (25-20, 25-20) on Tuesday in the first round of the Area 8-A/AA tournament at Athens Academy.

Molly Gay had six assists and Megan McIntire had five assists, while Lauren Lewallen and Alaina Plummer each added two kills for Lakeview, which plays Morgan County at 5 p.m. Thursday at Athens Academy in the second round of the area tournament.

BUFORD SPLITS IN REGION TOURNAMENT:
Maggie Roper had 14 kills and 10 digs as the Lady Wolves defeated Clarkston 2-0 (25-8, 25-5) and lost to Greater Atlanta Christian 0-2 (22-25, 19-25) on Tuesday in the Area 6-A/AA tournament in Lilburn.

Denee Badois had 21 points serving to go with 13 aces and four blocks, Nancy Mattox had seven kills and a block and Liz Darden had 15 digs for Buford (37-8), which continues play in the area tournament at Great Atlanta Christian at 5 p.m. Thursday.

CHESTATEE WINS TWO: The Lady War Eagles defeated Lanier 2-1 (25-19, 21-25, 25-22) and Eastside 2-1 (25-14, 15-25, 25-22) on Tuesday at Eastside.

Melissa Bailty had 16 kills and 13 aces, Kourtney Buffington had 16 digs and Jennifer Hill had 27 assists, three kills and six aces on the day for Chestatee, which opens play in the Area 8-AAA tournament at 6 p.m. Thursday at North Hall.

WEST HALL TAKES TWO IN AREA: Senior Nicolette Ashley had 15 digs, 11 aces and a kill and senior Laykin Herford had 19 assists and three aces to lead West Hall to wins over Walnut Grove (25-23, 25-18) and Gainesville (25-14, 25-14) on Tuesday at home for Senior Night.

Julie Walsh, also a senior, added five kills, three digs and six aces and senior Gracie Allen had seven kills on the night for West Hall (22-14, 5-4 Area 8-AAA), which opens play at 5 p.m. Thursday at North Hall in the area tournament.

Softball

BUFORD 7, GREATER ATLANTA CHRISTIAN 2:
Madyson Wynegar went 2-for-2 with three RBIs to lead the Lady Wolves to the win in the Region 6-AA tournament on Tuesday at Lovett.

Melissa Dickie (11-3) earned the win, while Karly Fullem earned her third save of the season for Buford (23-4).

Fullem also added a double and an RBI, while Kallie Case had a hit and two RBIs and Kodi Ricketson went 1-for-2 with a double and two runs scored for the Lady Wolves.

With the win, Buford moves into the championship game and will play the winner of Greater Atlanta Christian/Blessed Trinity at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and then again at 5 p.m. Friday, if necessary. Should Buford win Thursday’s game, it will be Region 6-AA champions.

JEFFERSON SPLITS IN REGION TOURNAMENT:
The Lady Dragons lost to Dawson County in the second round of the Region 8-AA tournament in Jefferson on Tuesday, but rebounded to defeated Oglethorpe County 10-2 in five innings in the second game of the day.

Against Dawson County, Jordyn Whitfield went 2-for-3 for Jefferson (22-8-1).

In the second game, Morgan McKinney threw a complete game, striking out six, while going 2-for-2 with a run scored for Jefferson. Anna Alexander, Lindsey Miles, Summer Bartek and Paige Pate each had two hits for Jefferson, with Miles and Alexander each adding three RBIs and Bartek having two.

Jefferson will play the loser of Thursday’s Union County/Dawson County game at 7 p.m. Thursday at home.
