The Gainesville volleyball team defeated Heritage 25-18, 25-22 in the first round of the Region 8-AAAAA tournament on Thursday.
Alyssa Turner led with 10 service points, four kills and two aces, and Sydney King had eight digs and three aces. Tanai Watson added eight assists, four service points and four aces for the Lady Red Elephants, and Bethany Whitenton had six service points, two aces and two kills.
Gainesville plays Clarke Central in Round 2 of the tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday in Gainesville.
LAKEVIEW STAYS ALIVE IN 8-A: Katie White recorded 16 digs, 11 kills and two aces to lead the Lady Lions in a first-round loss to George Walton Academy (25-21, 25-23) and a comeback win against Tallulah Falls (25-9, 23-25, 25-12) on Thursday in Athens.
Shelby Ross added nine digs, six kills, four aces and two blocks for Lakeview Academy, and Bailey Towles had 19 assists and five aces. Katie Gay had nine kills and Peaches Shipley tallied six kills, four aces and a block.
The Lady Lions return to action in the next round of the tournament on Saturday at Providence Christian Academy in Lilburn.
Cross Country
Lakeview Academy’s Dustin Snyder finished second overall with a time of 16 minutes, 25 seconds at the Bob Roller Invitational at East Jackson High on Thursday in Commerce.
Lewis Brooks was third overall, finishing in 16:42, and Dalton Snyder took ninth in 17:04.
The Lions finished fourth overall out of 20 teams.
