Jefferson wins season-opening wrestling tourney

The Jefferson Dragons defeated White County, Lumpkin County, Central Gwinnett, Flowery Branch and Dawson County to capture first place Saturday at the Spartan Slam wrestling tournament at West Hall. Flowery Branch defeated Dawson County to take second place after beating West Hall, Lovett and Alpharetta.

For Jefferson, Jace McColskey led the way with five pins, followed by Mitchell McGhee, Chase Piperato, Jack Dollar, and Zach Rhymer with four. Tanner Thurmond, Aaron Anderson and Trevor Reef all had three.

Brady Dyer, Chuckie Allen, Robert Bland, Anthony Williams, Zach Winter and Daniel Boddie all recorded three pins for Flowery Branch.

Dawson County’s Evan Kells finished the day with four pins. Lumpkin County finished the tournament with wins over White County, Central Gwinnett and Lovett and losses to Jefferson and Whitewater. West Hall ended the day 2-3, and White County finished without a win in pool play.

VIKINGS FINISH THIRD: East Hall finished third Saturday at the D. Marlow Duals in Homer. The Vikings beat Dunwoody 64-18, lost to Oconee County 27-47, beat Riverwood 64-18, beat Olgethorpe County 62-9 and beat Elbert County 42-33 in the third place dual match.

Ryan Broome, Edward Vergara and JD Holloway were all 5-0 on the day.

Basketball

Montrell McKenzie scored 26 points and pulled down 20 rebounds to lead the Knights to a 67-75 win over Class AAAAAA South Gwinnett on Saturday at the East Hall Classic in Gainesville.

Johnson (1-0) fell behind 26-17 after one quarter, but rallied to get within three at the half and take the lead for good in the third. Drew Dunham added 17 points for the Knights, Ty Cockfield scored 16, and Roderick English added 15 points, eight rebounds, five steals and five assists. Carter Cagle had nine points, eight rebounds and five assists for Johnson.

Cam Moye, a Georgia Southern recruit, led South Gwinnett with 20 points.

CHESTATEE GIRLS 47, FRANKLIN COUNTY 42: The Chestatee Lady War Eagles held off Franklin County on Saturday in the first round of the Jefferson tip-off tournament at Jefferson High.

Sam Brown led the team with 17 points and five rebounds, Erin Clifford added nine points and Maegan Kenimer scored seven points and a team-high nine rebounds for Chestatee (1-0).

BUFORD BOYS 79, CRISP COUNTY 50 (scrimmage): Brad Mapes scored 31 points and Isaiah Williams added 11 to lead the Wolves to a win in their scrimmage game Saturday in Buford. Buford opens the season Saturday against Westlake in the On The Radar Hoops showcase at North Cobb Christian.
