High school scoreboard: Lakeview girls finish third in Region 8-A

The Lakeview Academy girls avoided a first-round matchup with Wesleyan by defeating Athens Christian 37-30 in the third-place game of the Region 8-A basketball tournament Saturday in Social Circle.

Brittany Moore led the Lady Lions (17-7) with 12 points. Maddie Haymore chipped in seven points and Louisa Jacobs added six for Lakeview, which will visit Paideia on Friday in the first round of the Class A state tournament.

Ashley Lillie led Athens Christain with 11 points. The Lady Eagles, who lost all three meetings with Lakeview this year, will travel to Norcross on Friday to play the top-ranked Lady Wolves of Wesleyen.

Commerce boys 60, Lakeview Academy 54

Daniel Olvera led the Lions with 11 points in their loss to Commerce on Saturday during the third-place game of the Region 8-A boys basketball tournament in Social Circle.

The loss gives Lakeview (18-10) the No. 4 seed in the Class A state tournament. The Lions will play the No. 1 seed from Region 7-A.

Commerce (12-13) was led by Cameron Billings’ 13 points and Bubba Bonds, who scored 12. The Tigers will play the No. 2 seed from Region 7-A in the Class A state tournament.

TENNIS

Gainesville boys 3, North Hall 2

A sweep in the doubles matches propelled the Red Elephants past North Hall on Saturday.

The team of Luis Hokayem and Corey McDonald defeated Charlie Hortenstine and Michael Franze, 7-5, 6-2, while the team of Robbie Billbrough and Drew Denning beat North Hall’s Issac Black and Scott Swanson, 6-0, 6-2.

The Trojans (1-3, 1-0 Region 7A-AAA) got singles wins from Eli LoCicero and Mitch McCray and Gainesville got a singles win from Ryan Joiner.

Carrollton boys 4, North Hall 1

The Trojans followed up their loss to Gainesville with a loss to Carrollton on Saturday.

The doubles team of LoCicero and Hortenstine were the only victors for North Hall (1-4), beating the team of Joseph Micacchione and Brent Gafford, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.

North Hall visits Gilmer at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
