Gainesville High’s volleyball team finished third in its pool at the Athens Academy Invitational on Saturday in Athens.
The Lady Red Elephants (12-10; 2-0 Area 8-AAAAAA) opened pool play with a straight-set (26-24, 27-25) win over Habersham Central before falling to Wesleyan in straight sets (25-18, 25-14). Gainesville rallied from a set down to top George Walton Academy 2-1 (23-25, 25-20, 15-8), though fell short in a competitive semifinal match to tournament host Athens Academy in straight sets (25-21, 25-21).
Savannah Roys was instrumental in the Red Elephants attack with a team-high 32 kills while dishing 34 assists, served up five aces and added 35 digs. Senior libero Sydney King aided in the Red Elephants defenses with 30 digs, and contributed two service aces. Anna Wylie followed suit in the attack with 14 kills, 10 digs and 4 1/2 blocks.
Camille Holcomb (32 assists, three aces, 11 digs), senior Bessie Winston (10 kills) and Isabella Appling (six aces, 17 digs) were others to contribute throughout the tournament.
The Lady Red Elephants resume region play on Tuesday in a quad-match against host Apalachee, Winder-Barrow, and Habersham Central in Winder.
