High school scoreboard: Johnson boys soccer team clinches Region 8-AAAAA championship

Junior Arellano, Michael Arica, Rigo Campa and Marco Vazquez each scored for the Johnson boys in a 4-1 win against Loganville to lock up the Region 8-AAAAA championship on Tuesday. Cooper Bowen had five saves for the Knights (13-3, 5-0).

On Thursday, Johnson hosts Flowery Branch at 5:30 p.m. at Billy Ellis Memorial Stadium.

FLOWERY BRANCH BOYS 3, LANIER 1: Jaden Harmon, Elias Araya, and Carlos Servellon each scored for the Falcons on Tuesday.

Luke Biasi and Fernando Castro contributed an assist apiece for the Falcons (10-5-1), who visit Johnson at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in Oakwood.

FLOWERY BRANCH GIRLS 4, LANIER 1: Anna Grady scored two goals for Flowery Branch in Tuesday’s contest. Halie Windish and Caroline Wysocki each notched a goal for the Lady Falcons (10-6-1).

Flowery Branch goalie Kelsey Mathis had eight saves. Flowery Branch opens the first round of the playoffs next Thursday at home against an opponent to be determined.

GAINESVILLE BOYS 7, APALACHEE 1: The Red Elephants clinched the Region 8-AAAAAA championship by defeating Apalachee 7-1 on Monday.

Alejandra Covarrubias scored two goals for Gainesville, while teammates Brandon Reyna, Pedro Santos, Derian Alarcon, Sergio Diaz and Bryan Oliveres each produced a goal of their own.

Gainesville will host Harrison in the first round of the playoffs April 28th.

DISCOVERY BOYS 6, LAKEVIEW 3: Andrew Miller Bell netted two goals for Lakeview in Tuesday’s game. Daniel Bulos added a goal for the Lions (6-9), while teammate Jack Perkins had an assist.


The Gainesville girls golf team lost to Habersham Central 145-149 on Monday at the Apple Mountain Golf Course.

Kiley Blackburn was the match low-medalist with a 7 over par 43 for the Lady Red Elephants. Julia Ferguson carded a score of 50 for Gainesville, which will compete with Buford and Habersham Central on Wednesday.
