Jefferson High senior pole vaulter Tyler Porter earned a national rank by becoming one of seven athletes in state history to break the 16-foot mark with a vault of 16-1 at a competition earlier this month. Porter is a back-to-back state champion at the Georgia Olympics, including a new Class A record of 14-2 as a sophomore, followed by a 15-0 last season in Class AA.

In July, Porter hit the 15-5.75 mark in the pole vault of the decathlon at the Region III US Track & Field Junior Olympics in Maryland. The Jefferson High athlete finished eight of 10 events before having to pull out with an injury. Porter’s first decathlon ended with a fifth place finish and a 15-7 in the pole vault.

At the National Junior Olympics, Porter finished with a 13-9 in the pole vault.
