Gainesville boys defeat Johnson

The Gainesville High boys basketball team took a 22-7 lead over Johnson after the first quarter on Friday night in Oakwood en route to a 68-46 win.

A.J. Johnson tied a game-high with 14 points and was one of nine Red Elephants to score in the game. Quon Holcomb scored 12 points and Keodrick Sadler added a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) for Gainesville (13-6, 6-2 Region 8B-AAA), which hosts fourth-ranked West Hall at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Johnson was led by Matt Hollis with 14 points and Cam Schofield with 11. The Knights visit Walnut Grove at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

JOHNSON GIRLS 50, GAINESVILLE 28: Caitlin Sloan scored a game-high 25 points and the Lady Knights rode a 23-12 halftime lead to the win Friday in Oakwood.

Lyndsey Pethel led Johnson (13-7, 7-1 Region 8B-AAA) with seven rebounds. The Lady Knights visit Walnut Grove at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Mikalyn DeFoor scored 11 points to lead Gainesville, which hosts West Hall at 6 p.m. Monday.

CHESTATEE BOYS 61, STEPHENS COUNTY 48: Keelan Passmore scored a game-high 28 points, and the War Eagles put 20 points on the board in the final period to take the victory Friday night in Toccoa.

Jordan DeGraff added 15 points and Cole Morgan scored 10 for Chestatee (3-16, 2-4 Region 8A-AAA), which hosts Riverside Military Academy at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

CHESTATEE GIRLS 46, STEPHENS COUNTY 38: Peyton Robertson led the sixth-ranked Lady War Eagles to the win Friday in Toccoa.

Robertson’s 23 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks were all team highs for Chestatee (17-3, 5-1 Region 8A-AAA), which led 17-16 at halftime. The Lady War Eagles visit Dalton at 4 p.m. Saturday.

NORTH HALL BOYS 57, LUMPKIN COUNTY 31: The Trojans had 11 players score in the win Friday night in Gainesville.

Chris Barnes had a team-high 17 points and was the only North Hall player in double figures. The Trojans limited Lumpkin County to just 13 points in the first half.

North Hall (13-7, 5-1 Region 8A-AAA) hosts East Hall at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Lumpkin County hosts Stephens County at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

NORTH HALL GIRLS 52, LUMPKIN COUNTY 38: Led by 14 points and 10 rebounds from Mary Kate Rushton, the Lady Trojans won Friday in Gainesville.

McKenna Rushton added 11 points for North Hall (10-10, 5-1 Region 8A-AAA). The Lady Trojans host East Hall at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Lumpkin County (2-19, 0-6 Region 8A-AAA) hosts Stephens County at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

WEST HALL BOYS 83, WALNUT GROVE 52: Shunquez Stephens scored 16 points and his brother Jamaad Stephens added 15 for the fourth-ranked Spartans in the win Friday in Loganville. West Hall (18-3, 9-0 Region 8B-AAA) scored 27 points in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

William Stroup and Jarquise Young each scored 12 points for West Hall, which visits Gainesville at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

WALNUT GROVE GIRLS 53, WEST HALL 33: The Lady Spartans fell behind 19-5 after the first quarter and could never recover on Friday in Loganville.

Amber Johnson scored nine points for West Hall (8-14, 3-6 Region 8B-AAA), which visits Gainesville at 6 p.m. Monday.

ATHENS CHRISTIAN BOYS 81, LAKEVIEW ACADEMY 64:
The Lions couldn’t overcome a nine-point effort in the second quarter and lost Friday in Athens. Lakeview led 23-20 after the first period, but was outscored 22-9 in the second quarter and could never get back within reach. Athens Christian shot 20 more free throws than the Lions in the win.

Jackson Wells scored 15 points, Austin Pearson scored 11 and Nick Drury added 10 for Lakeview Academy (10-10), which visits Athens Academy at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

ATHENS CHRISTIAN GIRLS 36, LAKEVIEW ACADEMY 24: Mona Abraham scored nine points and Taylor Handte added eight in the losing effort Friday night in Athens.

Lakeview Academy (2-17, 1-10 Region 8-A) trailed 17-15 at halftime but only managed three points in the third quarter. The Lady Lions visit Athens Academy at 6 p.m. Saturday.

BUFORD BOYS 58, CLARKSTON 45:
T.J. Shipes scored 16 points and Alex Flagler added 11 as the ninth-ranked Wolves won Friday in Clarkston.

Payton Wehunt scored nine points for Buford (13-5, 4-1 Region 6A-AA), which led 33-18 at halftime. The Wolves host Wesleyan at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

BUFORD GIRLS 53, CLARKSTON 23: Andraya Carter’s 19 points was enough to propel the No. 2 Lady Wolves to the win Friday in Clarkston.

MacKenzie Darrah added 11 points for Buford (16-1, 11-0 Region 6-A), which led 21-4 after the first quarter and never looked back. The Lady Wolves will host Wesleyan at 6 p.m. Saturday.
