High school scoreboard: Gainesville boys golf sits in fifth place at The Invite at Chattahoochee

A.D. Winston carded a first-round 73 for Gainesville as it produced a first-round 299 and sits in fifth place with one round left to play at The Invite at the Chattahoochee Golf Club. Ryan Hogan had a first-round 74 for the Red Elephants, while Brody Simmons finished with a 75.

Turk Pettit of Lee Scott Academy (Auburn, Ala.) leads after carding a first round 3-under par. In the team standings Columbus shot a first-round 290 to hold a one-shot lead over Lee Scott Academy and Dalton.

Final-round play is today in Gainesville.

GAINESVILLE 7, APALACHEE 5: Banks Griffith had four hits for Gainesville as it won the regular-season finale against Apalachee on Friday in Winder. Also for the Red Elephants (21-7, 11-4 Region 8-6A), Cameron Wilson, Dalton Kyle and Jared Smith each had a double. AJ Smallwood and Corbin Lindsay each chipped in two hits for Gainesville.

Up next, Gainesville opens the Class 6A state tournament on Friday with the doubleheader in a best-of-three series at Ivey-Watson Field. Opponent and time are still to be determined.

DAWSON COUNTY 7, NORTH HALL: 2: Connor Beardon drove in four runs for the Tigers on Friday in Dawsonville. Hudson Sapp had two RBIs for the Tigers, while teammate Nate Sorrells contributed a RBI.

MADISON COUNTY 2, JEFFERSON 1: Lane Watkins had Jefferson’s only RBI in Friday’s game.
Jefferson opens up the first round of the playoffs against Heritage with a doubleheader in the best-of-three series on Friday in Ringgold.
