West Hall boys secure No. 1 seed in 8B-AAA

The No. 2 West Hall boys basketball team used a 24-8 run to open to second half to defeat eighth-ranked Monroe Area 74-55 on Friday in Monroe.

With the win, the Spartans (20-4, 11-1 Region 8B-AAA) secured the top seed from the south subregion going into tournament play.

West Hall’s Jarquise Young led all scorers with 32 points, William Stroup added 20, and West Hall outscored Monroe Area in each of the first three quarters.

The Spartans visit Sprayberry at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in their final regular season game and open play in the Region 8-AAA tournament on Feb. 17.

WEST HALL GIRLS 35, MONROE AREA 22: Amber Johnson scored 10 points and Maia Booker added nine for the Lady Spartans, who won Friday in Monroe despite only scoring one point in the first period.

West Hall (9-16, 4-8 Region 8B-AAA) does not play again until the region tournament, which beings on Feb. 15.

JOHNSON BOYS 64, LANIER 46: The Knights outscored Lanier 33-19 in the second half to earn a subregion win Friday in Suwanee.

Matt Hollis scored 21 points and Cam Schofield added 14 for Johnson (10-13, 2-8 Region 8B-AAA), which ended a six-game losing streak.

Ty Odem pulled down 13 rebounds to go along with seven points for the Knights, who host Oconee County at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

JOHNSON GIRLS 55, LANIER 19: Caitlin Sloan had a team-high 12 points in the win Tuesday in Sugar Hill.

Emily Byers had seven steals to go along with nine points for Johnson (14-9, 8-2 Region 8B-AAA), which is currently second in the subregion and one game back of leader Walnut Grove.

The Lady Knights, who held Lanier scoreless in the third quarter, will host Oconee County at 6 p.m. Saturday.

EAST HALL BOYS 74, FANNIN COUNTY 39: Brian Edwards scored a game-high 19 points in the win Friday in Blue Ridge.

Joshua Hampton added 11 points for East Hall (17-5, 8-0 Region 8A-AA), which will enter the region tournament as the No. 1 seed from the north subregion.

The Vikings host Gainesville at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

CHESTATEE GIRLS 45, LUMPKIN COUNTY 27: The ninth-ranked Lady War Eagles led 14-3 after the first quarter and cruised to the win Friday in Dahlonega.

Peyton Robertson had a game-high 17 points for Chestatee (19-4, 7-1 Region 8A-AAA), which is the current No. 1 seed in the subregion.

Rachel Kelly added 15 points and six rebounds for the Lady War Eagles, who visit White County (5-13, 2-5) at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Lumpkin County (3-20, 1-7) hosts Franklin County (12-9, 3-3) at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

LAKEVIEW ACADEMY BOYS 57, TOWNS COUNTY 47:
Austin Pearson scored a team-high 16 points and Jackson Wells added 15 in the win Friday in Hiawassee.

Austin Montgomery scored 12 points for Lakeview Academy (12-10, 5-3 Region 8A-A), which is currently second in the subregion. The Lions visit subregion leader Commerce at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Towns County (4-19, 2-10) was led by Bradley Swanson’s game-high 18 points. D.J. Rogers added 15 points for the Indians, who host Riverside Military (6-10, 5-6) at 5 p.m. Saturday.

TOWNS COUNTY GIRLS 62, LAKEVIEW ACADEMY 23:
The fifth-ranked Lady Indians improved to 11-0 in subregion play Friday in Hiawassee.

Jordon Moss scored a game-high 16 points for Towns County (22-1, 11-0 Region 8A-A), which led 21-7 after the first period and held Lakeview to single-digit scoring in each quarter.

Ali Bleckley and Gabby Arencibia each added 13 points for Towns County, which has already secured the top-seed from the north subregion when tournament play begins Feb. 14.

Lakeview Academy (2-19, 1-12) was led by Mona Abraham’s nine points and will visit Commerce (6-12, 3-7) at 6 p.m. Saturday. Towns County hosts Commerce at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

FLOWERY BRANCH BOYS 69, CLARKE CENTRAL 63: Byron Keith scored 15 points and Quinncy Hodges added 11 in the win Friday in Athens.

Rudy DeAza scored 10 points for Flowery Branch (8-14, 3-4 Region 8A-AAAA), which outscored Clarke Central 27-24 in the final period. The Falcons host Winder-Barrow at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

RABUN COUNTY GIRLS 62, DAWSON COUNTY 52:
Allie Costley had a team-high 14 points, while going 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the loss Friday in Dawsonville.

The Lady Tigers led 18-10 after the first quarter, but were outscored 21-10 in the third and couldn’t recover.

Dawson County (10-11, 1-6 Region 8A-AA) visits Union County at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

BUFORD BOYS 70, CROSS KEYS 49: The eighth-ranked Wolves led by just one point at halftime, but exploded for 32 points in the third to put the game out of reach on Friday in Atlanta.

Jake Burnette led the way for Buford (15-6, 5-3 Region 6A-AA), which moved to a half-game back of Decatur for the No. 2 seed in the subregion.

Jameir Hughes had a game-high 25 points for Cross Keys (6-12, 1-6).

T.J. Shipes scored 14 for the Wolves, who visit Madison County at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

BANKS COUNTY GIRLS 44, UNION COUNTY 40:
The Lady Leopards jumped out 12-2 after the first quarter and withstood a strong run late to earn the win Friday in Blairsville.

Madison Franklin led Banks County (10-14, 2-8 Region 8A-AA) with 13 points and Taylor Kennedy added 12.

Union County (10-10, 3-4) was led by 17 points from Holly Abernathy and 12 points from Angie Hughes. The Lady Panthers outscored Banks County 17-13 in the fourth quarter, but were unable to close out the comeback.

Banks County visits Dawson County (10-11, 1-7) at 7 p.m. Feb. 11 and Union County hosts Rabun County (21-1, 6-1) at 6 p.m. Saturday.
