Commerce baseball tops Jefferson in season opener

The Commerce baseball team trailed Jefferson by a run after the first inning Tuesday, but scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth and went on to defeat the Dragons 11-7 in both teams’ season opener.

Brandon Brooks led the way for the Tigers (1-0), going 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. Colton Davis also added a home run with two RBIs and two runs scored for Commerce.

For Jefferson (0-1), Kevin Ross went 2-for-3 with a run scored, Andy Nicholas hit a home run with two RBIs and a run scored and Nathan Carson drove in two runs.

The two teams play again at 5:30 p.m. Monday in Jefferson.

UNION COUNTY 9, TOWNS COUNTY 5: Coleman Sullivan went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored, and Daniel Coyne belted a home run as the Panthers won Tuesday in Hiawassee.

Zach Odom went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Dalton Everett added an RBI double and two runs scored for Union County (1-0), whose pitchers accounted for 17 strikeouts. The Panthers visit Calhoun at 5 p.m. and Towns County visits Tallulah Falls at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

FLOWERY BRANCH 13, RIVERSIDE MILITARY 3 (SIX INNINGS): Chase Hulsey had three hits and Taylor Jones added two RBIs as the Falcons won Tuesday in Flowery Branch.

Jones also had a triple, while C.J. Navis had three stolen bases and three runs scored for Flowery Branch (1-0), which scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the 10-run rule into effect and end the game. The Falcons visit North Hall at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

BUFORD 3, HEBRON CHRISTIAN 1: Jamie Ritchie hit a solo home run and Troy Herterick went 2-for-3 while earning the save on the mound in the win Tuesday in Buford.

Herterick pitched the final two innings, striking out five and giving up no runs for Buford (2-0), which hosts Archer at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

FLOWERY BRANCH 7, CEDAR SHOALS 0: Cassidy Elrod scored four goals as the Lady Falcons won Tuesday in Flowery Branch.

Abby Peacock, Julie Sienkiewicz and Megan Kirk each scored one goal for Flowery Branch (2-2, 1-0 Region 8-AAAA), with Peacock also adding an assist. Alex Lee recorded an assist for the Lady Falcons, who visit Mill Creek at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

JOHNSON BOYS 6, LANIER 1: Juan Morfin scored four goals with one assist to lead the Knights to the win Tuesday in Gainesville.

Ariel Mejia and Israel Azura each added one goal and Edgar Ochoa recorded two assists for Johnson (3-0, 2-0 Region 8B-AAA), which visits Chestatee at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

JOHNSON GIRLS 6, LANIER 0: Led by two goals from Chandler Steele, the Lady Knights won Tuesday in Gainesville.
Kayla Madsen and Kaylin Dumanowsky each added a goal and an assist for Johnson (2-0-1, 2-0 Region 8B-AAA), which visits Chestatee at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

BUFORD GIRLS 3, NORTH HALL 0: Lindsey White scored a goal with an assist and Caitlin Hollis earned the shutout in goal Tuesday in Gainesville.

Jessie Vaverka and Ceely Coker each scored a goal for Buford (2-1), while Katie Garth added as assist. The Lady Wolves host Shiloh at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Golf

WHITE COUNTY GIRLS 80, LUMPKIN COUNTY 92: Kathryn Whitaker and Jodi Samples each carded a seven-hole score of 40 on Tuesday at Achasta Golf Course in Dahlonega.

Kaylen Butler (45) and Hannah Fowler (47) were the low-scorers for Lumpkin County, which faces Dawson County at 4 p.m. Thursday at Achasta. White County plays in the Gwinnett Open at 9 a.m. Saturday at Chimneys in Winder.

Tennis

NORTH HALL BOYS 3, STEPHENS COUNTY 2: Led by a win at No. 1 singles and a sweep of doubles, the Trojans won Tuesday.

Mitch McCray won his singles match (7-5, 6-3), while the teams of Joe Nedza/Sam Taylor (6-2, 6-3) and Reed Patrick/Nathan Jones (5-7, 6-2, 6-2) swept doubles for North Hall (1-1, 1-0 Region 8A-AAA), which hosts Lumpkin County at 4 p.m. March 1.

FLOWERY BRANCH GIRLS 3, BUFORD 2: With two singles wins and a doubles win, the Lady Falcons won Tuesday in Buford.

Anna Kate Shaw and Elizabeth Mallory won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, while the team of Paolette Matute/Jessica Blaisdel won at No. 2 doubles. The Lady Falcons host Loganville at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

WEST HALL BOYS 5, WALNUT GROVE 0: The Spartans won in straight sets Tuesday at the Bobby Bailey Tennis Center. Max Wilson, Connor McFall, Min Kim and the teams of Tatum Scroggs/Grayson Kyle and Ryan Casey/Connor Kirkland each earned victories for West Hall (6-0, 3-0 Region 8B-AAA), which visits Gainesville at 4 p.m. Thursday.

WEST HALL GIRLS 4, WALNUT GROVE 1: Susannah Pate, Sunny Xayavongsa and the teams of Catherine Young/Erin Cansler and Kayla Brady/Hahn Nguyen each earned wins for the Lady Spartans on Tuesday in Gainesville.

West Hall faces Gainesville at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Bobby Bailey Tennis Center.

JOHNSON BOYS 5, MONROE AREA 0: The Knights lost one set combined in the win Tuesday at Monroe Area. Drew Jones, Oscar Rivera, Casey Tanner and the teams of Carlos Flores/Grayson Anthony and Cristian Delgado/Parker McDonald each earned wins for Johnson (1-1, 1-1 Region 8B-AAA), which visits East Hall on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

JOHNSON GIRLS 4, MONROE AREA 1: Cady Nix, Maggie Turner and the teams of Claire Crain/Harlee Robson and Carlyn Ivey/Emma Rowlett won in straight sets on Tuesday at Monroe Area. The Lady Knights face Lanier at 4 p.m. Thursday in Gainesville.
